John Graham is a man who makes things happen. From leading successful energy companies and serving on prestigious boards to supporting organizations that have shaped communities, his life has been marked by leadership, generosity, and a determination to make a difference. At 87 years old, Mr. Graham has a lifetime of stories to tell, each one offering a glimpse into a life well lived.
It is nearly impossible to tell the story of Mr. Graham without mentioning his wife, Suzy. Their lives are so intertwined that one story simply cannot be told without the other. Married in 1960, the two have shared a lifetime of experiences, accomplishments, and adventures. Mr. Graham describes Suzy as a marvelous woman whose interests have spanned everything from politics to travel and design. Together, they have made an extraordinary impact on the organizations and communities they hold dear.
Mr. Graham grew up in Hammond, Louisiana, where he developed an early appreciation for the outdoors. A high school athlete and avid outdoorsman, he spent much of his youth hunting and fishing, even occasionally hunting alligators with a friend. His love for the outdoors continued throughout his life, taking him on hunting adventures around the world and introducing him to people who would become lifelong friends. These days, his appreciation for wildlife remains, although his perspective has changed a bit. He particularly enjoys watching the Christwood swans swim in the pond, and feeding them their daily bread.

His academic pursuits took him from Louisiana to Princeton University, where he earned a degree in Geological Science. He later returned to Louisiana to attend Louisiana State University, earning his law degree. His connection to Princeton has remained strong throughout his life, including serving as president of the university’s Class of 1961.
Mr. Graham began his professional career practicing law with Milling, Saul, Benson, Woodward and Hillyer before transitioning into the energy industry. From 1975 until 1994, he served as president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board of Graham Resources, Inc., a private company specializing in the acquisition and investment management of oil and gas production properties and oil service companies. Under his leadership, the company continued its work until its sale to Prudential Insurance Company in 1994.
His professional accomplishments extended well beyond Graham Resources. Throughout his career, he held numerous leadership positions, including serving as chairman of the board of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Yet, when reflecting on his accomplishments, it is not simply his business success that stands out. Rather, it is the opportunity to use that success to support institutions and causes that make a meaningful difference.
Mr. Graham has dedicated considerable time and resources to civic and philanthropic organizations. His involvement has included the Madison Society of the Library of Congress, Baptist Community Ministries in New Orleans, and the board of Southern Baptist Hospital. For him, being involved with great institutions and having the ability to provide financial support when it was needed has been among the most rewarding aspects of his life.
That spirit of generosity is one he shared with Suzy. Together, the Grahams have supported numerous charitable causes, often preferring to make their contributions quietly. In one instance, the couple made a significant donation to St. Martin’s Episcopal School with the intention of remaining anonymous. Suzy, in particular, preferred to give without recognition. However, she was eventually encouraged to share their involvement in hopes that their generosity would inspire others to do the same.
Their commitment to philanthropy and service did not go unnoticed. In 2014, John and Suzy were recognized as Philanthropists of the Year in St. Tammany Parish, an honor reflecting their longstanding dedication to the community.
A Lasting Connection to Christwood
The Grahams’ relationship with Christwood is one that stretches back to its earliest beginnings. Long before becoming residents themselves, John and Suzy played meaningful roles in the planning, development, and realization of both Christwood and Christ Episcopal School.
Suzy served on the first board of Christ Episcopal School and later continued her involvement through service on Christwood’s board. In December 1999, she was introduced to residents as a board member in The Grapevine, Christwood’s weekly newsletter. The archived publication offers a glimpse into her early involvement and the important role she played in helping shape the community.

For the Grahams, Christwood was never simply another organization to support. It was a community they believed in, helped build, and ultimately chose to call home.
Today, Mr. Graham speaks highly of the community he helped bring to life. He compares living at Christwood to staying at a fine resort, complete with exceptional food, comfortable accommodations, and a welcoming atmosphere. But beyond the amenities, he believes it is the people and the peace of mind that make Christwood truly special.
He particularly appreciates the friendships that develop among residents, many of whom arrive as strangers and quickly become familiar faces. Equally important is the reassurance of having access to a continuum of care, with healthcare professionals available when needed.
For someone who has been involved with Christwood since its inception, there is something especially meaningful about witnessing the community fulfill the vision that inspired its creation. Mr. Graham takes pride in knowing that both residents and staff have found a place that truly feels like home.
A Lifetime of Memories
Perhaps one of the most fascinating features of Mr. Graham’s home is a wall of built-in shelves filled with 87 years of memories. Photographs, memorabilia, awards, and certificates line the shelves, each representing a different chapter in his and Suzy’s remarkable lives.

The collection tells a story that words alone could hardly capture. There are reminders of professional achievements, travels around the world, cherished friendships, and the many organizations that have benefited from the Grahams’ involvement. Among the memories is Mr. Graham’s experience serving as King of Washington Mardi Gras, another unique distinction in a lifetime filled with extraordinary experiences.
Yet, among the impressive accomplishments and treasured keepsakes, it is often the simplest details that reveal the most about a person.
One of Mr. Graham’s favorite features of his residence is his walk-in pantry, which he keeps stocked with snacks for Suzy. He enjoys bringing her treats, a small but thoughtful gesture that speaks to the affection and companionship they have shared throughout their marriage.
It is a touching reminder that behind the titles, accolades, and accomplishments is a man who values the people in his life above all else.
As Mr. Graham reflects on his 87 years, his story is about far more than professional success. It is about the friendships made along the way, the institutions strengthened through generosity, the adventures experienced, and the life he and Suzy have built together.
His connection to Christwood brings many of those chapters full circle. Having helped shape the community from its earliest days, he now enjoys the very lifestyle and sense of belonging he worked to make possible for others.
For John Graham, a life well lived is not measured solely by what one accomplishes, but by the lasting difference those accomplishments make in the lives of others.
